GREAT OPPORTUNITY

On October 4th, hundreds of Catholics from around the state will join together in the State Capitol building in Jefferson City to discuss how to bring Catholic values to bear on governmental decision making.  Participants can attend a variety of workshops on important issues, including Getting Parishes Involved in Voter Education, New Developments in Stem Cell Research, The Home Lending Crisis, Welcoming the Immigrant---A Challenge for Parishes, and Media and the 2008 Election.  The assembly also includes youth activities including a motivational workshop about serving in public office and how young people can make a difference in critical issues facing our state, a legislative scavenger hunt in the Capitol, and the mock legislature.  Archbishop Jose’ Gomez, Archbishop of the Archdiocese of San Antonio, Texas, will discuss the role of the Church regarding immigration.  The day concludes with a Mass celebrated by all of the Catholic bishops of Missouri at St. Peter Church.  The event is free and lunch is provided by the Missouri Catholic Conference.  You can register on-line at www.mocatholic.org or contact the MCC at 800-456-1679.  This event is sponsored by the Missouri Catholic Conference-the public policy agency of the Catholic Church in Missouri.

SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Boonville will sponsor one of the 3,000 Public Square Rosaries Across America for peace and conversion on Sat., Oct. 11th from 12 noon to 12:30 p.m. at the Hannah Cole Morgan Street Park on the corner of Main and Morgan Street.  Bring a chair.  In case of rain, we will move to SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church at 322 Seventh Street which is off Morgan Street.  For more information, contact Connie Gerling at 660-882-5785.

The Howard County Food Pantry is in better shape, but there is a continuing urgent need for food donations.  St. Joseph's will continue to collect food and money donations on the third Sunday of each month, however, food and money donations will be accepted at any time.  The food items requested are: peanut butter, dry cereal and oatmeal, canned vegetables and fruits, dry goods such as beans, pasta and macaroni, canned meats, tuna, soups and chili.  Please no glass items.  In season home grown vegetables and fruits are welcome.
